December 27, 2022, the Barberton City Council was notified that as of midnight December 28th, 2022, the Barberton Herald would be closing its doors. According to their social media accounts, the Barberton Herald was established in 1923, making it the longest-standing newspaper throughout the Barberton and Norton area.
As of Dec 28, 2022, social media accounts for the Barberton Herald have been updated to “Temporary Closed”.
According to researchers, one-third of local news outlets are projected to close by 2025. The popularity of Social Media has shifted where people find local information. The shift has put a strain on local publications and continues to make it harder for local news outlets to stay above water.
The West Side Leader has reached out to local organizations in an effort to cover down for the closing of the Barberton Herald. The West Side Leader is currently evaluating local reporters to report on local news and issues.
